So...what exactly is a credit union and what's in it for me?

The concept of a financial cooperative is simple.  Credit unions are owned and operated by their members who pool their savings and lend to each other.  Serving members is the reason credit unions exist.

There are no outside shareholders; credit unions are owned by the people who save and borrow there.  Earnings are returned to the members in the form of lower rate loans, a higher return on savings, fewer fees and better service to members.

Credit unions are volunteer driven...
The active involvement of volunteers is the cornerstone of the credit union philosophy.  Our volunteer board of directors and committee members are elected by and from our membership.
